The Foundation Degree in Coaching Football is a flexible full-time programme of study for individuals who have attained the UEFA ‘A’ Licence qualification in coaching football and can be completed in 12 – 16 months of study.

The programme has been developed jointly between FA Learning and the University of Chichester and will aim to equip individuals with a scientific understanding of the principles, theories and concepts that underpin the performance and development of individual players and teams as described for example by the Long Term Athlete Development Modal (LTAD). The programme is intended to meet the continuing educational and training needs of football coaches who work with a wide range of players.

Indicative Course Content

The Foundation Degree in Coaching Football programme blends a mixture of internet based resources, residential study blocks, study days and work-based learning. A distinctive feature of this programme is the incorporation of work-based learning as an essential and integral part of the programme. It is a condition of the admissions criteria that individuals are responsible for planning, delivering and evaluating coaching sessions with a team for a minimum of ten hours per week.

  • The Biomechanics of Football

Semester 2 (February – July)

  • Physiological Limitations to Football Performance
  • The Acquisition of Skilled Performance in Football
  • Managing the Coaching Process
  • Diet and Performance for Football

Research Project (August – December)

Residential study blocks*

Residential study blocks are an integral part of the programme, each student will therefore be expected to attend four residential study blocks. These will take place between Mondays and Wednesdays at the beginning and the end, or near the end of each semester. During these study blocks, students can meet with tutors whilst also preparing for and completing assessments. The residential study blocks are also supported by two non-residential study days, one in each semester. These days will feature guest lecturers and the opportunity to meet-up with tutors.

Progression Route

Successful completion of the Foundation Degree in Coaching Football will enable, subject to the completion of a short bridging course, entry onto the third year of the full-time campus based BSc (Honours) Coaching Science Degree or the third year of the BA (QTS) Physical Education programme at the University.

Entry Requirements: Applicants must possess the UEFA ‘A’ Licence and be coaching a team for a minimum of ten hours per week.

Applicants should also possess GCSE English and Maths at grade C or equivalent.

To meet the requirements for the accreditation of prior learning candidates may be asked to submit a portfolio of evidence based on aspects covered during the UEFA ‘A’ Licence.

Places on the programme are limited to 20 per year. Applications should be received by the end of May for entry in September.
